Role

Planning, backend, RAG pipeline and on-site operation (started as a 1-person project; 1 frontend developer joined later)

Problem

While answering questions about study materials, meetings and events, it had to avoid generating content not based on the materials, and the web MVP received feedback that it was inconvenient to access

Solution

  • Search branchingBranched on whether to search the materials by question intent, and restructured the materials into QnA units to pass as context
  • Answer checksCollected real questions and checked whether answers matched the materials and whether they made up content without a basis
  • Channel switchMoved to a KakaoTalk chatbot so it can be used without separate access

Result

Answered 1,000 and 2,000+ questions at the two events, respectively

Moved from a web MVP to a KakaoTalk chatbot

Overview

An AI chatbot that answers questions about the materials, meetings and events of Korea Campus Crusade for Christ (CCC), taking both the study materials and the meeting context into account. Handled planning, backend, the RAG pipeline and on-site operation. It started as a one-person project, and a frontend developer joined later.

The chatbot must not generate content that is not based on the materials. Questions that need grounding in the materials, and counseling-style or general conversation that needs no search, were hard to handle in the same way. Also, when the materials are simply split into fixed lengths, related explanations end up divided across several pieces and the answer lacks context. Question classification, the unit of search and the way context is passed were adjusted together.

Key features

  • Question answering on the materials: Answers questions based on the Bible, CCC materials and the meeting context
  • Counseling and general conversation: Conversational answers that fit the nature of the question, without searching the materials
  • KakaoTalk chatbot: Ask questions and get answers in KakaoTalk, with no separate site to visit

Implementation and improvements

  1. Branching the search by question intent

Classified questions into types that need a search of the materials, counseling-style questions, and other types. For questions that need grounding in the materials, applied RAG, which searches for related content and passes it to the AI as answer context. Counseling-style and general conversation are branched to answer without a search.

  2. Restructuring the materials into QnA units

Moved away from splitting by fixed length and restructured the knowledge into QnA units, where a question and its answer are linked. Adjusted the unit of search so that related explanations can be retrieved together.

  3. Passing context at the document level

Instead of combining only the retrieved pieces, passed the surrounding explanation at the document level as well. Widened the range of context so that an answer does not depend on only a few sentences.
